Inconvenience Yourself

| FRM News

In Philippians 2:5-8 we have an excellent and most powerful account of our Lord and Savior’s downward spiral from a heavenly home to the earth that He created. There is no greater humiliation for Christ than to be made like His own creation and then to suffer a violent death at the hands of the people that He came to save.

Paul says in verse 5, “let this mind be in you.” This is a command to us to have the mind of Christ. In John 13 we get a glimpse of what the mind of Christ is. A few days earlier Jesus had rode into the city with a triumphant entry. They had worshipped Him and sang hosanna and laid out the palm branches for Him. In a few short hours the people would soon turn on Him and Jesus would go from the exalted king to the condemned criminal.

After finishing supper He took a basin and a towel and went to each of His disciples and washed their feet. For us today we lose the significance because of the cultural gap. Imagine walking around all day on dusty roads where donkeys and horses roamed. You would be pretty dirty and filthy. The job that Jesus was performing was intended for the least of the least. There were not many jobs that were lower in the era that Jesus lived. But, He did it…why?

We read in verses 14 and 15 “If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example that you should do as I have done to you.” This is the mind of Christ, to be a servant. As Paul wrote to the Philippian church his main emphasis was on unity. This unity that Paul was centering on was only possible through humility. We will never have true unity without putting others first in our lives. It is only when we take our eyes off of ourselves and put them on others that we can have a true mind like Christ. He regarded not His own life, but He did everything for the lives of those around Him. Look for ways that you can be inconvenienced for the sake of the gospel message.
